History

The company exists for already more than 75 years. Over time the company has experienced both pleasant and complicated stages in its development. However, responsible attitude of the company’s personnel as well as their determination pulled the company through. Due to this the company may enjoy its current activity results.

08 February 1934 is deemed to be the official date of the establishment of UAB “Kauno autobusai”, as on this date, Kaunas city Council adopted resolution No. 444 “regarding the establishment of the company designated to transport the passengers in Kaunas city”. Prior to this date, since 1924, there were twelve (later - sixteen) buses owned by private carriers running in Kaunas. However, the townspeople and the management of the municipality were not pleased with services of such private carriers, so the municipality had to overtake the responsibility for the transportation of the passengers.

During the first years of the company’s existence, the young company had only a small number of buses, which was gradually increased: by 1937 the company had already purchased 44 buses. After two years (when the company had 454 employees), the manufacture of own buses was commenced in Šančiai repairs workshop. The beginning of the Second World War, however, interrupted the company’s activities and the manufacture of buses. The passenger transportation traffic has only recovered in 1945; at that point few buses were transporting passengers for the route “Town Hall-Panemunė”, whereas after two years the first intercity route “Kaunas – Šiauliai” was opened.

In 1950, the company was renamed to “Kauno autobusų – taksimotorų parkas”, and six years later it was reorganized into two independent companies: “Kauno taksi parkas” and “Kauno autobusų parkas”.

As the demand for public transport in Kaunas was growing, the bus fleet was developing also. It was getting more modern and the number of buses, routes and employees was growing. In 1984, the company had over 2 300 employees, 465 buses were exploited and 41 city, 10 suburb and 30 intercity routes were maintained.

Inasmuch as the activities of the bus fleet were expanding, the more strategically convenient establishment location of the company was also considered. In 1989, UAB “Kauno autobusai” moved to its current location at the address: Raudondvario pl. 105 - just after the branch of Kaunas State Bus Fleet was built in Vilijampolė.

From 1947 until 1992 both intercity and city buses were leaving from the bus fleet, then, finally, due to two different direction of transport usage, two separate companies formed. These were Kaunas State Suburb Bus Fleet and Kaunas State City Bus Fleet. The latter was reorganized into the private limited liability company of special purpose in 1994, whereas the year after it was renamed to UAB “Kauno autobusai”. The sole shareholder of the company is Kaunas city municipality.
